Welcome / Bienvenue
Visit Nik Meergans in the tiny village of St. Georges, France and he may greet you covered in clay or glaze or hail hello from a rooftop - the multi-disciplinary designer’s vision encompasses dramatic pottery to roof ridges.
Along with his partner Donna, an IT consultant who yearned for the countryside (and spent her commute to London reading the likes of Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall, Roger Phillips and John Seymour), they’ve taken on a substantial challenge; to create a sustainable home and workspace where they can realise dozens of dreams and creative ideas that germinated during their former life in Sussex, England.
The renovation plans for the old fermette and dependances include a stubborn determination to do as much of the work as possible, themselves, from pouring concrete foundations, repairing torchis and building oak structures, through to making each and every floor and wall tile.
But within the heavy building program, they take time to play, create and add beauty to the already rustic charm of their rural property. Enormous pots decorate the courtyard. Painstakingly recreated roof tiles match century-old ones. A terracotta chicken and tub of flowers threaten to tumble from roof tops. Quirky garden statues of welded old farming implements dot the garden. A range of pottery is available including cream traditional tableware, Christmas decorations and buttons and, by complete contrast, decorative Raku, dramatically glazed in burning sawdust.
From 2012, the couple hope to host guests in luxurious self-contained units, where they can enjoy home-cooked evening meals, breakfast on produce from the property, take part in creative activities and explore the unspoiled region of Les Sept Vallées.
In the meantime, Nik and Donna are happy to welcome visitors willing to brave the current chaos.
